The Lake Merritt's Public Programs

We’re proud to present a variety of events which are open to the public and designed to be of special interest to Bay Area older adults and our residents.

Frequently our presenters include distinguished medical professionals and researchers, wellness coaches and top-notch care givers. We also present programs by local historians, naturalists and others who are happy to share their expertise with us.

Our goal is to provide our residents and friends with relevant information which enriches their life experience.

Planning Your Estate: What’s Fair to Your Survivors?
Presented by Ruth Dixon-Mueller and Frederick Hertz

Whether you are expecting an inheritance, settling the estate of a loved one or making your own estate plans, questions of fairness are bound to arise. Sociologist Ruth Dixon-Mueller will talk about the seemingly contradictory principles of fairness and social justice that we face in deciding who will be our beneficiaries and personal representatives after we die (if not before) and in apportioning our worldly goods. Attorney and mediator Frederick Hertz will offer practical advice on how to engage in the estate planning process, address the emotional dynamics of family members and minimize disputes and litigation through effective communication.

Their newly published book, Pa$$ing On: What’s Fair in Family Inheritance? will be available for $14.00 (cash or check to Ruth Dixon-Mueller).

Broadway's Legendary Composer:  Cole Porter
Presented by Bonnie Weiss

Cole Porter brought sensuality and sophistication to the musical with such smash hits as Anything Goes and Kiss Me Kate, and such witty “list” songs as “You’re the Top”, “Let’s Do It’ and “It’s Delovely”. He also composed some of the most lovely and haunting ballads of the 20th century: “Begin the Beguine”, “Night and Day”, “Love for Sale”, "I Concentrate on You" and many others. In this presentation you'll see Mr. Porter, himself, in an appearance on the Milton Berle show and will learn about his fascinating life. You'll also see such legendary performers as Ethel Merman, Mary Martin, Frank Sinatra, Bert Lahr and many others performing some of Porter's most beloved songs.
